A house to come back to

A day with the mountain gorillas starts before dawn and ends with muddy boots and tired legs. It is easier when the rest of the trip is calm: a night or two in Kigali to rest after the flight, then a house to come back to. Each of our residences is booked to one group at a time, behind its own gate, with a house manager on site and housekeeping every day. No lobby, no check-in queue at the end of a long day: dinner can be cooked in the villa while you shower.

Gorilla trekking from Kigali works that way, and Kigali before or after a safari too. Nkeng, your concierge, arranges the trek with a licensed operator, the driver and the days around it, one WhatsApp message away.

Planning the trek around your stay

What the day involves, how to fit it around your nights in Kigali, and what to pack. Nkeng confirms the details for your date.

The day itself

Volcanoes National Park is in the far northwest of Rwanda, on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, about two and a half to three hours from Kigali by road. Trekkers gather at the park headquarters in Kinigi at 7 am for a briefing, and each small group is given a gorilla family to visit, matched to its fitness.

The walk can take from 30 minutes to four hours or more, at an altitude of 2,500 to 4,000 metres, and porters can carry your bag. Once with the gorillas, each group stays one hour. Eight permits are issued per gorilla family each day, and the minimum age is 15.

Before or after: two ways to plan it

As a day from Kigali

Your driver collects you at the villa before dawn, in time for the 7 am briefing; Nkeng confirms the time. You are back in the afternoon or early evening, depending on the length of the walk, and the house is ready: a shower, then dinner.

With a night near the park

Some travellers spend the night before the trek near the park, in Musanze, 13 km from the headquarters, or at a lodge on its edge. Book your Kigali nights on either side, and tell Nkeng which you prefer when you enquire.

Either way, plan a quiet day in Kigali after the trek, before your flight or your next stop.

What to pack

  • Solid walking shoes, and gaiters
  • Long sleeves and sturdy trousers against stinging nettles
  • Gardening or leather gloves
  • A light waterproof jacket, in case of rain

Rules and the permit can change: Nkeng and the operator confirm them for your date.

Questions about gorilla trekking from Kigali

How far is Volcanoes National Park from Kigali?

About two and a half to three hours by road, in the far northwest of Rwanda. Trekkers meet at the park headquarters in Kinigi at 7 am, so a day trip from Kigali starts before dawn; some travellers prefer a night near the park before the trek.

Can you arrange the gorilla permit?

Yes. Nkeng arranges your trek through a licensed operator, for a fee, quoted before you confirm. The permit itself is booked and paid in advance, and only a few are issued each day, so tell Nkeng your dates early; Nkeng confirms the current price.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes: 15 years old to track the gorillas. Younger children can stay at the villa; Nkeng can look for a babysitter on request.

How fit do I need to be?

The walk can take from 30 minutes to four hours or more, at 2,500 to 4,000 metres. Groups are matched to a gorilla family by fitness on the morning, and porters can carry your bag.

What should we pack?

Solid walking shoes and gaiters, long sleeves and sturdy trousers against stinging nettles, gardening or leather gloves, and a light waterproof jacket.

Should we stay in Kigali before or after the trek?

Both work well: a night or two before, to rest after the flight, and a quiet day after, before you fly on. Your villa stays yours while you are at the park. At Amahoro and Urugwiro, airport pickup is included for stays of 3 nights or more (The Black Key Arrival).

Do we pay a deposit?

No deposit is needed. Nkeng confirms the total in writing before you arrive, and payment can be made on arrival. Bank transfer, card and mobile money are accepted.
