Private villas, one country

The Black Key Collection is a small collection of private villas in Rwanda. Each one is a home you have to yourself: a gated house with its own staff, its own garden and its own kitchen, booked to one group for the length of the stay. There is no lobby and no shared corridor. It is made for families, couples, groups of friends and business travellers who want the space of a house with the attention of a hotel.

Rwanda suits that way of travelling. Kigali, the capital, spreads over green hills in the middle of the country, and its international airport is the country's main gateway. From a villa in the city, the concierge can plan a morning with gorillas, a safari day, an evening at a restaurant or a day of meetings, and have the house ready when you return.

Where you can stay

Today the collection is in Kigali, and the villas are in different parts of it: Amahoro in Kibagabaga, Urugwiro in Kacyiru, Irebero in Rebero and Ikaze in Niboye, Kicukiro. Each sits behind its own gate, a short drive from the airport and from the restaurants, offices and venues of the city. The Kigali guide explains the neighbourhoods and helps you choose between them.

Experiences across the country

The concierge arranges experiences across Rwanda from the villa: Akagera safari day trip, Nyungwe chimpanzees and canopy walk, Lake Kivu weekend, Kigali city tour and coffee farm visit, and gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, which has its own guide. Each one is planned around your dates, with a private driver from the villa. The details and the fee are shared with you before you confirm.

Good to know

Three of the four villas have a bedroom without stairs for older guests, and children are welcome. Rates are in US dollars; you can pay in USD, in Rwandan francs, by mobile money or in crypto. Tell the concierge your dates, the number of guests and the occasion, and the villa is ready when you arrive.

Arranged by your concierge

Add a private driver, a helicopter transfer and groceries stocked before you arrive through the concierge; each comes with a fee quoted before you confirm. Tell the concierge your dates and the size of the group, and the rest follows.

The villas

Every house below is private, gated and looked after by a house manager.

Amahoro: a four-suite villa in Kibagabaga where the evenings move from the pool to the fire pit and on to the cinema. Amahoro sleeps eight in four en-suite bedrooms: one king and three queens.

Then there is Urugwiro, a gated villa in Kacyiru with a duplex principal suite and a second lounge for a quieter corner. A house manager is on the property, housekeeping is daily and a security guard is on duty around the clock.

Irebero, a hillside villa in the Rebero Hills with a pool and hot tub, a spa room, a private gym and a wine bar, sleeps up to seven guests in four bedrooms, three of them en-suite, plus a guest bathroom downstairs. A house manager is on site and daily housekeeping is included.

In this group: Ikaze, a villa in Niboye with a shaded patio, a lawn, an outdoor playground and a high chair. Ikaze sleeps four in two air-conditioned en-suite bedrooms, one with a king bed under a canopy and one with a double bed; a half bathroom is there for guests.
