The Memorial

The Kigali Genocide Memorial, in Gisozi, is the final resting place of 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi. It is a place of remembrance and of mass burial, and many visitors to Rwanda choose to go, to learn and to pay their respects.

The Memorial is normally open every day from 9 am to 5 pm, with last entry at 4 pm; on the last Saturday of the month it opens at 1 pm, after Umuganda. Visitors are asked to dress and behave respectfully. It is about ten minutes by car from the city centre.

If you wish to visit, the concierge can arrange a private driver who takes you there and waits, so you can take the time you need, and an interpreter if one would help. Please check the Memorial's own website for current opening times before you go.

The Memorial's amphitheatre is also where the Ubumuntu Arts Festival is held; in 2026 it took place from 17 to 19 July.
